T = MC scared!

Tomorrow is the first day of Math Centres in my class. I'm a little nervous to see how it goes, but I may be surprised since the kids do really well in Language centres with my teaching partner in the mornings. I'm hoping that the afternoon runs equally as smooth. I have a 65 minute class tomorrow to get through centres and I am introducing addition to my little munchkins. Here is how I foresee the block going:

Calendar lesson on the carpet (10 minutes - whole group)
Centre #1 (10 minutes)
Centre #2 (10 minutes)
Centre #3 (10 minutes)
Centre #4 (10 minutes)
Centre #5 (10 minutes)
Wrap Up on the carpet - 5 minutes (whole group)

3 of my groups in guided math will be doing the same Intro to Addition lesson. 10 minutes isn't a long time and I'll have my timer going. It will give me enough time to talk to them about what they know about addition and then explain the Math Work activity (see below). My grade 2's (only 3 of them) will spend their time with me figuring out what they know about addition. Only 1 of my grade 2's is working at grade level so this could go one of a few different ways. My final group consists of students modified to Kindergarten or Pre-K curriculum. With them, my focus is on number recognition and some basic counting strategies.

Math Work: I have made a sheet and will have students use counters to figure out the answers. We have some cute counters with bugs, sea creatures, animals, etc. that they always have fun using!

Math with Technology: My husband (a resource teacher) gave me a list of fun and interactive websites students will be on. Again, 10 minutes isn't a long time.

Math Journal: Student have a word problem to solve and a sentence to write to share their answer.

Math Games: Students are able to select a math game of their choosing to work on individually.

I'm excited to see how it goes. I will definitely give an update (hopefully with pictures!) once we get through the afternoon.

Have a fantastic Monday everyone!

  1. It sounds like you have a good plan. I know my kiddos love math stations. I cannot wait to hear how it goes. =)
