O Canada!

A friend of ours emailed both DH and I and asked if we would be able to arrange for presentations at our school about the Six String Nation Guitar. I had no idea what it was, but since DH seemed to be totally on board, I figured I'd approach my principal. He said yes and so it was planned. Then I took the time to actually get out the website for {Six String Nation} and realized that this really is a cool piece of Canadian history.

The guitar is made using various pieces of Canadian history. It contains wood from a canoe paddle of Pierre Trudeau, wood from the Golden Spruce, pieces of buildings such as Parliament, Massey Hall, and the original Hudson Bay Company. It has materials donated from David Suzuki and Sir John A. McDonald. And it has pieces of a hockey stick from Maurice Richard. There are way more pieces involved in the making of the guitar and I encourage all Canadians to look at the site. It really is amazing.

I really felt honoured that we were able to get this piece of Canadian history in our school. My co-worker played the guitar and had arranged a medley of songs by Canadian bands. Then at the end of the assembly, the whole school sang K'Naan's "Wave the Flag". It really felt like a community. And if I can pry my 3 year old's hands off of my iPhone for a second, then I'll post a picture of me with the guitar. It was way cool.

I also put a new item on TPT. It is a full alphabet set of sheets that can be used for letter recognition. Each sheet has upper and lower case letters. I have laminated mine and students use dry erase markers to find the matching lower and upper case letters. This would be great for a literacy centre or even just for independent work for students struggling with letter recognition. You can find it at my TPT Store!
